The History of Video PokerWebsite Gambling Article by - admin - Oct 19, 2006 Video Poker is one of the famous gambling games of the modern times. It is a combination of the concepts of a video game and poker that made this game more interesting and intriguing to players. Video poker machines of today are more high tech and computerized compared to the game's early ancestors that existed in more crude and simpler forms. The game is based on poker, the card game. Video poker is a combination of the card game and technology, put together into a unique game that entertained many generations. Since the 1880's, poker has been entertaining players in America. The name poker was given to the game by Jonathan Green in 1834. The video poker machines of the earlier times were machines operated by coins. These video poker machines used poker cards and were developed by the company named Sittman and Pitt of Brooklyn in the later part of the 1800's. Normally, these poker card machines were found only in cigar shops and liquor stores, but its popularity made it possible for the machines to spread across the United States. The poker card machine's technology was still crude and very mechanical in such sense. The machine works by pulling a handle after a coin was inserted. Five drums that held the cards spun after pulling the handle. The player would have to wait for the machine to stop in hopes of getting a winning hand. If a player wins, he either gets drinks or cigars. Unfortunately for the players, the poker card machines do not have these cards, the 10-Spades and J-Hearts, on the card deck. This ultimately reduced the possibilities of a player to win. The DRAW feature was developed in 1901 by a man named Charles Fey. The already popular game became more interesting due to Fey's additional feature that allowed players to make use of their poker skills while playing the game. This improvement in the poker card machine enabled players to beat the odds. The development that Charles Fey implemented on the poker card machine allowed players to hold some of the drums while making a spin on the remaining drums. This was the first HOLD and DRAW made for a poker game. The popularity of poker card machines seems to fade over the years. But in the 1970's, the poker card machine took a new turn in history. The game was reinvented with more features to cater the changing expectations of players. This became the new and improved video poker. The technological breakthrough of the personal computer paved the way for a new and modern version of the poker card machine. The video poker machine has embraced with it the technology and concept of a computerized gaming machine which made it more popular. No more of the old clunky metal machine. The modern video poker machines are commonly found in casinos and bars. And with the introduction of the internet, video poker made its way through the web with the popular online version.
