Horse Betting Terms

Website Gambling Article by - Ray La Foy - Jan 2, 2007

Horse racing is a historic sport that's thought to pre-date written history itself.

It's also thought that horse betting came on the scene very shortly after the first competitive race. There's just something about watching those majestic giants glide across a track with a human in saddle or tow that captures the attention of literally millions the world over. Getting involved in horse betting is a fun way to spend time and even earn a little extra money, but it does require some basic knowledge to get started.

Horse betting comes with its own dictionary of sorts. The bets themselves have many different possibilities that anyone who wants to bet should understand.

Let's take a look at some of the major horse betting terms and what they mean:

Single or straight bet This is the most common horse betting wager. Those betting pick a winner at given odds. If the horse comes in first, you win.

Place This bet involves a win whether the chosen horse comes in first or second.

Show This is a good all around bet. Those who wager to show get earnings if their chosen horse comes in first, second or third.

Combination This bet involves two to four horses and the order in which they finish.

Pick 3 This particular bet can be tricky. It requires the better to choose the winners of three consecutive races.

Pick 6 This involves the same principles as the Pick 3, but covers six consecutive races instead.

Daily Double This is won by picking the winner of the first and second races at a track. It requires special betting and must be wagered before the first race begins.

Quiniela In this horse bet, you win if you choose the first and second winners, in any order, in a particular race. You must say you're choosing the quiniela and give the numbers of the two horses in question.

Quiniela box This involves the choosing of three or more horses. To make the bet, you request a quiniela box on whatever numbers you chose. If any two of your selections come in first and second, you win.

Quiniela double This is a combination bet that involves two winning quinielas in the last two races. You have to select two horses to win and place, in any order, in each of the last two races. To win, you must win both quinielas.

Perfecta, exacta This horse betting technique is the same as a quiniela, except the horses must be chosen in order and they must come in in order.

Perfecta box Again, this is the same as the quiniela box, but the order must be exact.

Trifecta To win on this bet, you must choose the first three horses to finish in order. If they come in, the pay off can be big.

Superfecta This bet involves choosing the first four horses to finish in the field. They must come in exactly as stated.

Horse betting is a great pastime that's been enjoyed the world over for hundreds and hundreds of years. Getting started does involve a basic understanding of the terms and possible bets.
