A pair of Top 10 teams hit the field of Lane Stadium this evening when the undefeated and #2 ranked Boston College Eagles invade Blacksburg to take on HC Frank Beamer’s 9th ranked VT Hokies. Both clubs have had ample time to prepare for this match-up as neither participated in a game last week.
Last we saw VTECH, the Hokies covered as 14-point road favorites at Duke. They held the Blue Devils to a measly 14 points, while their offense and special teams accounted for the teams second highest point total of the season (43). As for BC, they went into South Bend and handed the Irish yet another humiliating home defeat by a 27-14 final count. This is the 14th all-time meeting between the two programs, with Virginia Tech holding a 9-4 series advantage. However, the Eagles have won two of the last three meetings, including a 34-27 decision in Lane Stadium back in 2003. The other victory came just last year when BC was installed as 3-point underdogs in Chestnut Hill, and won SU by a 22-7 final count.
This year’s game holds enormous ACC Championship implications as well as National Championship possibilities. With a number of Top 10 teams already suffering a loss this season, Boston College would do themselves and the BCS a huge favor by winning this game. That being said, VTECH would love nothing better than to throw a wrench in the BCS system since HC Beamer has been an advocate of a playoff system for many years now.
This will no doubt be a highly contested game. Both clubs have solid defensive units, but the same can’t be said on the offensive side of the ball. The Eagles are led by Heisman contender QB Matt Ryan whose completed 63% of his passes for 2149 yards and owns a TD/INT ratio of 17/6. VTECH’s field general is still to be determined as the availability of QB Tyrod Taylor is still up in the air. If he can’t go, HC Beamer’s will be forced to go with back-up QB Sean Glennon who fell out of favor with the coaching staff and Hokie fan base simply due to his knack of throwing the errant ball.
Blacksburg will most definitely be electric come Thursday night, so tune your sets to ESPN at 7:45 ET for this ACC showdown!!!
