Hawaii vs. San Jose State

ESPN treats us with some more Friday night football as the 16th-ranked Hawaii Rainbows invade San Jose to take on former Head Coach Dick Tomey’s Spartans. Hawaii has taken six in a row from their WAC counterparts, which includes last year’s 54-17 drubbing on the island.

San Jose comes into this contest winners of their last three games, and they currently stand 2-0 in WAC competition. They knocked off Idaho 28-20 last week covering the 7-point spread in their Homecoming game. The Warriors are off a beat down of Utah State last week at home, 52-37, and currently boast a six game winning streak on the road.

Much has been made of the health of Hawaii’s Heisman hopeful QB Colt Brennan, but rest assure Hawaii fans, he’ll certainly make this start with the rest of the country tuning in to see exactly what this kid has got. Whether he finishes the game is another story….

Hawaii holds an advantage on both sides of the ball in this match-up. The Warriors have put close to 54 PPG on the board thus far, while the Spartans have struggled offensively all season long. The 17-points they’ve averaged per game is 8 points lower than the 25 PPG they averaged just a short season ago. A lack of a run game has really hampered the unit’s ability to keep the chains moving, and consistency must be found here if they expect to come close to covering the lofty 19-point spread tagged on this game.

However, Spartans QB Adam Tafralis should find success moving the ball through the air considering Hawaii’s weak point on the defensive side of the ball is through the air. They’ve allowed opponents to rack up 204 passing YPG overall, and that number’s jumped to 233 YPG their L/3 contests. If the Spartans are able to put forth a balanced offensive attack, they have an excellent shot of making this game more interesting than the experts suggest.

Tune to ESPN at 8:00 ET to see if the Spartans have what it takes to pull off the monumental upset, or if Hawaii will just roll through yet another opponent en route to the programs first undefeated season.

SLAM YOUR MAN!!!
