Kentucky vs. South Carolina

The SEC takes center stage Thursday evening on ESPN as the #8 ranked Kentucky Wildcats invade Williams-Brice Stadium to take on Steve Spurrier’s #11 ranked South Carolina Gamecocks. The Wildcats are off to their best start since 1984 at 5-0, and they’ve won 10 of 11 games dating back to last season. They currently sit at 1-0 in the SEC, and tonight’s game marks the start of a treacherous three week stretch that also has them locking horns with LSU and Florida back in Lexington. The Gamecocks are coming off a solid home victory over Mississippi State that saw them increase their SEC mark to 2-1 and 4-1 overall.

Kentucky QB Andre Woodson has been noticed by many of the big wigs across the country, and he’s even starting to garner some Heisman hype. He comes into tonight’s game completing 67% of his passes for 1309 yards with an impressive TD/INT ratio of 16/1. With him leading the offenses charge, the Wildcats are averaging close to 500 YPG and almost 47 PPG. Those are some staggering numbers, but this unit will get a big test from SC’s defense this evening.

The Gamecocks are limiting opponents to a shade under 16 PPG, and they’ve been a beast at neutralizing their opponents passing games. They’ve only allowed them to average 83 YPG through the air, but that has more to do with the fact that their defense allows 200+ YPG on the ground than it being a lockdown unit.

Cock’s Head Coach Steve Spurrier doesn’t have much respect for this KY club going by some remarks I’ve read on the net, and there’s no doubt the Wildcats would love nothing more than to make him eat those words. However, the Cocks have a gaudy mark riding against them in this spot, as the Gamecocks are 12-1 SU under Spurrier when installed as the favorite.

That mark looks extremely tough to overcome, but this KY club already displayed its moxie by pulling off a last minute win vs. Louisville and dominated the 4th quarter in their comeback win at Arkansas. Tune to ESPN at 7:45 ET to see if the Wildcats storybook season continues, or if the Cocks improve their mark to 13-1 SU as chalks under the watchful eye of the ‘ol ball coach.
