Rice vs. Southern Mississippi

Website Gambling Article by - Mike Rose - Oct 3, 2007

The Rice Owls open up CUSA play with a trip to Hattiesburg to take on the Golden Eagles of Southern Mississippi in this midweek ESPN2 affair. This will be the first time these two teams have squared off with Rice joining the CUSA West Division back in 2005.

The Owls haven’t gotten off to the start new HC David Bailiff would have liked (0-4), but most of that can be attributed to having to learn a new system for the third time in three years. Also contributing to their record is the fact that they’ve taken on three teams from the Big 12. Baylor, Texas Tech, and Texas outclassed them severely in their match-ups as the Owls were outscored by a combined 159-55.

We got to see Southern Miss last week on the “Smurf Turf” up in Boise, and they didn’t put their best foot forward. Their defense got torched through the air to the tune of 307 yards and 506 total yards overall. They allowed the Broncos offense to dictate tempo and keep the chains moving by allowing them to convert 67% of their 3rd down tries. Through their first four games, they’ve allowed their opponents to average almost 28 PPG and 383 total YPG. This is not what we’ve come to expect form a Jeff Bower coached defense, and tonight presents an excellent opportunity to get the stop unit on track.

Offensively, it looks like we’ll get to see a ton of RB Damion Fletcher because both QBs Young and Reaves were lost within a weeks time. That means redshirt freshman QB Martevious Young will get the starting nod, and he’s yet to complete a pass at the collegiate level. Rice’s offense might come into this game struggling, but they’re going up against what’s been a porous Golden Eagles defense and they’ve got some offensive playmakers at the QB & WR position due to erupt.

Oddsmakers don’t think this will be much of a game since they’ve tagged the home team as 20-point favorites. Will this be another primetime dud of a telecast, or will this first time CUSA match-up represent itself well? Tune to ESPN2 at 8:00 ET and find out.

SLAM YOUR MAN!!!
