Chicago Cubs vs. Florida Marlins

Those sporting Cubbie blue will all have their TV sets tuned to their local broadcasts at 7:05 ET to watch the Cubs take on the Florida Marlins in the first game of a three game set. Chicago enters tonight’s game with a three game lead in the NL Central after the Milwaukee Brewers picked up half a game with their big win over St. Louis on Monday night.

Southpaw Ted Lilly will take the ball for the visitors, while the home team will counter with lefty Dontrelle Willis. Lilly, one of a number of Chicago off-season acquisitions has more than earned his paycheck this year. He owns a 15-7 SU mark with a 3.78 ERA, and the Cubs have won 19 of the 32 games he’s started this season. The same fortune hasn’t been experienced by the D-Train. Willis inexplicably boasts a robust 5.32 ERA, and a 9-15 SU mark. He’s suffered nine of his 15 losses at home this season, while the Cubs own an 8-5 SU mark in Lilly’s road starts.

The Cubs just got done putting some breathing room between themselves and Milwaukee over the weekend by sweeping their three game set with Pittsburgh at Wrigley. Florida picked up some season ending confidence over the weekend by fighting tooth and nail with the NY Mets twice taking them to extra innings, but only managed one victory in the four game set.

With nothing to play for, the Marlins have been playing much looser baseball. This is a nasty spot for the Cubs as the Marlins have already broken many a Cub fans heart in the past. This young club would love nothing more than to do it once again. However, it won’t be easy as the Cubs come in with a pair of their superstars on fire. Alfonso Soriano and Aramis Ramirez both found their home run strokes over the weekend, and the Marlins pitching staff has been brutal all season long.

The Cubs magic number to clinch the division is four, and every game to close out the regular season string will be very stressful. However, don’t expect them to loose focus when they’re so close to the prize even though strange things normally happen to this franchise under these circumstances.

SLAM YOUR MAN!!!
