Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians

After Casey Blake went yard in the Bottom of the 11th Monday night, the Detroit Tigers pretty much knew their post-season aspirations had been wiped clean. The Yankees also won that night, and they went into Tuesday night’s action 5.5 games out in the AL Central, and 3.5 games behind in the Wild Card race. It’s going to take a hell of a run for the defending AL Champs to even qualify for the post-season now.

Justin Verlander was slated to go against Jake Westbrook Tuesday night, and the results of that game are unknown at the time of this writing. That being said, Justin hopefully pitched a gem and kept his club within the thick of the playoff race.

The Indians are 10-6 against the Tigers this season, and seem to be catching all the late inning breaks Detroit always seemed to get a season ago. What a difference a year makes!!!

This afternoon’s game will pit the Tigers Nate Robertson against the Tribe’s Cy Young contender CC Sabathia.

Sabathia has put forth a rock solid campaign in 2007. He’s 17-7 with a 3.21 ERA on the year, and his last start saw him become the all time leading left-handed strikeout leader in Cleveland Indians history. He had won three straight up until his last start at KC where he gave up 4 ER’s on 7 hits in 7 innings of work, while striking out 13 and walking 2. Sabathia is 2-1 with a 6.04 ERA against Detroit this season, and in 24 career starts against the Tigers, Sabs is 12-8 with a 4.38 ERA.

Robertson is winless in three starts against the Tribe this season and winless for his career at Jacobs Field, but the Tigers need for him to put history aside at this point and give them a chance for a victory in a must-win AL Central showdown.

A loss this afternoon spells ultimate doom for this club as they’re running out of time to catch those in front of them. Tune to your local telecast or the extra innings package on DirecTV to see if there is indeed a pulse still racing through Detroit’s bodies.

SLAM YOUR MAN!!!
