Atlanta Braves vs. NY Mets

The regular seasons coming to a close for very quickly for the Atlanta Braves. With only 17 games left on the docket, they find themselves 8.5 games in back of the first place Mets in the NL East, and 5 games out of the Wild Card spot. Needless to say, this is a must have game for them to carry over any confidence in closing ground on anyone over the next couple weeks.

Luckily for them it’s John Smoltz’s turn in the rotation, and he’ll be looking to improve upon his 13-7 record. He comes into this start on top of his game. He’s only 1-1 his L/3 starts, but he’s only given up 16 hits in 20 innings of work while striking out 21 and issuing four free passes. He’s squared off against the Mets potent line-up five times this season, and the Braves own a winning record at 3-2 in those starts. Overall, He is 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA against the Mets this year. His last start against them came just 10 days ago when the Mets and his old buddy Tommy Glavine got the best of him in a 3-2 loss. He went seven strong that night surrendering 9 hits and all 3 of the Metropolitans runs.

His opponent will be John Maine whose coming off a very poor start at Cincinnati where he only lasted 4.1 innings surrendering 9 hits and 6 earned runs in a 7-0 Mets loss. However, the start before that saw him have one of his best outings against these same Braves when he went 7 strong innings and only allowed 3 hits and 1 ER. John Maine just hasn’t been the same pitcher over the last month and a half that saw him hold the most wins on the Mets pitching staff through June. The right-hander hasn’t pitched this deep into a season in his career, and it looks as if the innings are starting to take a toll on him.

The Braves own a 9-8 series edge coming into tonight, but the Mets have taken four of the L/5. In order to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Braves bats must continue to rake like last night and they need another solid start from Smoltz. Tune into your local telecast or the extra innings package on DirecTV to see if they can get the job done.

SLAM YOUR MAN!!!
