New England Patriots vs. NY J-E-T-S

AFC East action resumes for the 2007-08 season in the Meadowlands when Bill Belichick’s NE Patriots take on Eric Mangini’s NY Jets. Both these clubs found themselves in the post-season a year ago as the Pats posted a 12-4 mark, while the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets shocked many throughout the league and churned out a 10-6 record.

The second go round will most definitely be tougher for the Jets as the rest of the league got a blueprint of what to see from them all of last year. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t have as much success as they did in ’06. They went out and made a big trade in the off-season bringing in RB Thomas Jones from the Bears who rushed for over 1200 yards the last two seasons. They also brought in a bunch of guys on the defensive side of the ball to help them decrease the 18 PPG they allowed a season ago.

All the hub bub in New England will finally take center stage as we get to see if WR Randy Moss still has anything left in the tank, and if LB Adalius Thomas is really that good or just a role player on what's usually a very stout Baltimore defense. The Patriots are certainly a popular flavor to take home the Lombardi Trophy this year, but I’ll reserve judgment until this club is 100% healthy considering they’ve got a plethora of players on IR to start the season.

This was a very interesting series back in 2006 as both clubs won on their opponent’s field. The Pats won by a 24-17 final count in Week 2, and Mangini and the Jets returned the favor in Week 10 by posting a 17-14 road win and cover in Gillette Stadium. However, the Patriots got the best of them two months later in the playoffs when they pounded them by a 37-16 final count.

This weeks game finds the Patriots as 6-7 point road favorites, and the ‘totals’ been set at 41. The Patriots have won and covered the L/5 times they’ve visited the Meadowlands, and they’re 7-1-1 ATS the L/9 times they took them on. However, this is an awful lot of points for the Pats to be laying in this spot with a number of key role players on the shelf. The Jets haven’t had much success against these guys recently, but Sunday afternoon offers up an excellent opportunity for them to snap their home losing streak.
