Miami Hurricanes vs. #5 Oklahoma Sooners

A rematch of the 1987 Orange Bowl takes place this afternoon as the Miami Hurricanes invade Norman to take on the 5th ranked Oklahoma Sooners. These teams were very familiar with one another in the 80’s as they met three times and the Hurricanes took all three contests. However, Oklahoma held the upper hand in the 70’s when they met twice and swept the series.

The Randy Shannon era got off to a fabulous start last weekend in Coral Gables as the Hurricanes went on to defeat the Marshall Thundering Hers by a 31-3 final count covering the 18-point spread in the process.

Oklahoma put forth an effort quite unlike any they’ve seen ion Norman for quite some time. Bob Stoops' troops showed why they are considered a National Title contender with their 79-10 whipping of North Texas. The 38-point spread was covered in the 2nd quarter, and they went ‘Over’ the total of 55 all by themselves. The score represented the most lopsided decision in a season- opener for Oklahoma since 1989 and was the second-highest point total since 1919.

Regardless of what happens in this game, tremendous athletes will be roaming the sidelines for both of these games. Oklahoma debuted a couple of frosh last week at QB and RB (Sam Bradford & DeMarco Murray) and both came through with flying colors. However, the offensive explosion OK Memorial Stadium witnessed last week will not be happening this time around. The Hurricanes boast a tremendous stop unit that returns seven starters from ’06 that only allowed opponents 15.5 PPG and a tad over 250-combined YPG.

The chess match between Miami HC Randy Shannon and OK HC Bob Stoops should prove to be some excellent drama, and I’m really curious to see if the Canes offense is capable of keeping them in the game.

Vegas opened up this contest by installing the Sooners 10-point favorites with a ‘Total’ of 43’. So far, Oklahoma seems to be the choice here as the line is now hovering around 11 with the ‘Total’ pretty much staying put. Be sure to tune into ABC at noon ET Saturday to see what transpires in this contest as the Canes look to snap their three-game losing streak to Oklahoma in a very hostile environment.
