History of Slot Machines

Website Gambling Article by - admin - Jun 8, 2006

When was the slot machine invented?

In 1899, by Charles Fey in San Francisco, California. His machine, the Liberty Bell, was coin-operated and had three spinning reels. Fey developed the idea for slot machines from poker machines, which were very popular during the last decade of the 19th century. The first machines were manufactured by hand by Fey himself and placed in the local gambling palaces on a 50% rental basis. So in addition to being the inventor, Fey was also the first proprietor of the machines.

In 1907, Herbert Mills, a Chicago manufacturer created 'Operator Bell', a slot machine similar to 'Liberty Bell' in design. Produced and distributed at a greater rate than Fay's 'Liberty Bell', the 'Operator Bell' slot machines experienced even greater success and by 1910, slot machines were very common in the United States of America. The era of cast iron machines ended in 1915, when Mills introduced slot machines with less expensive wood cabinets. In the early 1930s, the Mills Novelty Company made a number of additional changes to its line of slot machines that revolutionized the industry. First, it designed its machines to be much quieter. That's why its 1930s machines are referred to as the "silent bell". Then it introduced a double jackpot that assured players that one could win twice in quick succession.

Slot machines gained quite a bit more popularity in the 1940's when Bugsy Siegel furnished his Flamingo Hilton Hotel with them for the wives and girlfriends of the high rollers. Today, many high-rollers, both male and female, are Slot players. Virtually anyone who visits a casino, even for the first time, is familiar with a slot machine and how it operates - just put in your money, pull the handle and wait a few seconds to see if you win.

Slot machines were originally made with three reels and some still are, however today's slot machines you see in casinos typically have four or five reels. The bad side of that is the more reels the harder it makes your chance of winning the jackpot. Today, slot machines are no longer mechanical devices and they are no longer electro-mechanical devices. They are computer run, state of the art machines that use a Random Number Generator (RNG) to select the winning symbols. On the old slot machines, the actual reels spun to determine the winning and losing decisions. If there were ten symbols on each reel, there were 1,000 possible combinations (10 X 10 X 10 = 1,000). So if the winning combination on these antiques was three oranges, where each reel had one orange, the odds were 999 to one that you would hit the jackpot.

What is another name for the slot machine?

The one-armed bandit. The slot machine earned this nickname due to its single lever and low payout percentage. Also known as fruit machines in the UK. In 1910, manufacturers designed the gambling devices to give out packages of fruit gum to winners. By adding a gum vender onto the sides of the slots, they became gum dispensers, and slot manufacturers got around the law. Fruits, such as lemons, oranges, cherries and plums, which corresponded to the flavors of the gums, were also added as reel symbols.

There are basically two types of slots.

Straight Slots
A Straight slots jackpot will remain at a set certain amount of money until it is won, after which it resets and starts over again at that same amount. For example, a straight jackpot may be set at $50,000 and will remain at $50,000 until it is won, no matter how many coins are deposited into the slot machine.

Progressive Slots
On the other hand, the amount of money that may be won playing progressive slots is determined by the amount of money deposited into the slot machine. Thus the progressive jackpot increases with each play until it is won.

Todays modern Video Slot machines
Unlike the old traditional slot machines that depicted a parallel set of rotating reels, Video Slot machines today often display a grid of symbols arranged in rows and columns. During a spin, the symbols appear to rotate within each cell or column and then are randomly distributed throughout the cells when the spinning stops. Video Slots typically offer more pay lines than regular slots, and the lines may angle up and down through the cells as they move across the grid.

Today, no casino would be complete without gleaming rows of noisy, colorful, brightly lit slot machines. The mix of sounds from hundreds of machines chirping, spinning, stopping and clinking out coins is the iconic background music that fills every casino floor. They are by far the most popular casino game in the world, both in terms of number of games played and total wagers.

Nickel and quarter slot machines are the most popular, and account for about 85% of slots played in any given year. This popularity is followed by the dime boxes, then half dollar and silver dollar machines. You now find machines that accept $5 bills, and large progressive jackpot machines that take $100 bills.

The biggest money-maker for casinos is the slot machine with approximately 60 to 65 percent of the average casino’s profits being generated by slot machine play. In addition to being the biggest revenue producer, our friendly one arm pals have also been the single biggest cause of police raids, legal indictments, and courts decisions over all other forms of gambling combined. Today, slot machines are amongst the most popular games found in casinos, accounting for over 30% of casino profit.
